The Changeling Summary:
Crom delivers a man named Zez to a bitter rancher who ordered a bounty on him for killing his daughter, Manda. As brutal revenge, the rancher traps Zez in a pen and releases wild horses to trample him to death. Disgusted by the cruelty, Crom bonds with a wild horse named Snub, who has whip scars and a strong spirit.
While traveling together, Crom senses Snub is more than she appears. When they reach the mysterious Forgotten Hills, Snub reveals her true nature—transforming mid-gallop into a soaring eagle. Crom experiences a moment of true freedom with her in flight.
Returning Snub to the ranch to say goodbye, Crom declares she is not a possession but a changeling who had forgotten her true self in captivity. When the rancher tries to capture her again, Crom protects her, urging her to fly free. As Snub runs off, Crom reflects that he thought he was free—until he saw what freedom truly looked like in her.
